Before you begin your Shirdi pilgrimage, take five minutes to read these Shirdi yatra rules. The Samadhi Mandir welcomes lakhs of devotees every day and a few small rules keep the experience peaceful for everyone. Most are common-sense temple etiquette familiar to any Indian pilgrim, but a few are specific to Shirdi — and a handful of “wish I’d known” details (like the free cloakroom and the no-leather rule) can save you long detours. Use this page as a final pre-departure checklist along with our darshan guide.

Dress code for Shirdi

The Sansthan does not enforce a strict dress code at the main entry gate the way some South Indian temples do, but devotees are strongly expected to dress modestly inside the Samadhi Mandir and the inner premises. The unofficial code is the same one you would follow at any major Maharashtrian Vaishnava or Shaiva temple.

The no-leather rule

The Samadhi Mandir, Dwarkamai, Chavadi and Gurusthan are all places of darshan where leather is not permitted inside the inner shrine. This rule is gently enforced — security may stop you if you are visibly carrying a large leather handbag — and applies to:

  • Leather belts (wearing one is generally tolerated, but a leather hip-pouch is not).
  • Leather wallets carried in hand (keep in your pocket).
  • Leather handbags, satchels and camera bags.
  • Leather watch straps (rubber, fabric or metal straps are fine).

The safest option: leave anything visibly leather in the free Sansthan cloakroom near the main gate. Cloth or canvas bags pass through with no issue.

Photography and phones

Photography inside the Samadhi Mandir sanctum, Dwarkamai, Chavadi and Gurusthan is banned. The Sansthan posts boards in multiple languages and security will ask you to put away your phone if you raise it. You may take photos in the open courtyard, at the entry arches and along the temple lanes outside.

Mobile phones themselves are allowed inside — but switch them to silent before entering. Many devotees prefer to leave their phones in the cloakroom altogether to focus fully on the darshan.

Look to me and I shall look to you.

What to carry

What NOT to carry inside the sanctum

  • Leather items as listed above.
  • Cameras and video recorders. Mobile cameras are permitted to be carried but must not be used inside the sanctum.
  • Tobacco, cigarettes, gutka, alcohol — banned anywhere on Sansthan premises.
  • Large flower garlands — small marigold or rose garlands are accepted at the prasad-counter. Big ceremonial garlands should be offered through the Sansthan’s pooja-booking, not carried unannounced.
  • Sharp objects, lighters or matchboxes — security scanners will flag them.
  • Helmets, large backpacks — deposit at the cloakroom.

Free facilities every devotee should know about

1

Cloakroom

A free cloakroom operates near the main entry. Deposit shoes, leather bags and helmets here. Carry the token carefully; loss can mean a wait.

1

Drinking water stations

Multiple filtered water points are installed inside the temple complex. Refill your bottle freely — the Sansthan encourages it.

1

Prasadalay

The Sansthan’s mass kitchen serves a hot vegetarian meal (chapati, dal, sabzi, rice, sweet) free to every devotee. Just collect a token at the counter — no donation required, though a contribution is welcomed.

1

Wheelchairs and medical aid

Wheelchairs are provided at the entry on request. A first-aid post and ambulance stand are stationed near the main gate around the clock.

1

Lost & Found

Report lost items at the Sansthan office near the main gate. They maintain a register and many lost wallets/phones do find their way back.

Rules of conduct inside the temple

  • Maintain silence near the Samadhi. Devotional chanting is welcome; loud conversation is not.
  • Do not touch the Samadhi or the photographs unless directed by the priest.
  • Do not push or jump the queue. The Sansthan operates a strict darshan-flow system.
  • Do not haggle aggressively with sevadars or volunteers — most are unpaid devotees.
  • Children below five and senior citizens above seventy can use the priority counter near the entry.
  • Differently-abled devotees can request the dedicated darshan path; ask the Sansthan office at the gate.

What to do if…

  • You arrive at 4 AM: Head straight for Kakad Aarti — see the Aarti schedule.
  • You forgot to book darshan online: Walk up to the general queue — it is always open. Plan for 2–6 hours wait depending on the day.
  • You have only 3 hours in Shirdi: Buy a VIP darshan pass in advance, finish Samadhi Mandir + Dwarkamai + Gurusthan in 90 minutes, then Prasadalay.
  • You feel unwell in the queue: Ask any volunteer. They will escort you to the medical post and re-issue your queue position.
  • You lose your child: Report immediately at the Sansthan main office and have an announcement made over the public address.
