10 First-Time Shirdi Darshan Tips (Wish I Knew on My First Trip)

Updated: 15 May 2026Reviewed by: Shirdi Sansthan Editorial DeskVerified against: Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust notifications

A first time Shirdi darshan can feel overwhelming if you arrive without a plan. Reach Samadhi Mandir before 5 AM, avoid Thursdays, pre-book an Aarti pass on the Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust portal, and follow the dress and footwear rules below. The ten tips on this page are the small things that turn a confused first trip into a calm, complete yatra.

Shirdi is in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, PIN 423109, about 14 km from Sai Baba Airport (SAG) and right next to Sainagar Shirdi railway station (SNSI). The town runs on one rhythm — the Samadhi Mandir, which opens at 4:00 AM and closes around 23:30. Knowing the rhythm before you reach is half the battle. The other half is a few small habits that experienced pilgrims have learned the hard way.

1. Arrive Before 5 AM on Your Darshan Day

The Samadhi Mandir opens at 4:00 AM for Kakad Aarti at 4:30 AM. The general darshan queue from 5:00 AM to about 7:30 AM is the shortest of the entire day on weekdays (excluding Thursday). If you reach by 5 AM, you usually complete darshan within 60-90 minutes and have the whole day for Dwarkamai, Chavadi, Gurusthan and Khandoba Mandir. By 9 AM the queues triple, by noon they can stretch four hours, and on Thursday they start long and only get longer. Pre-dawn entry is the single biggest time saver. See the full Shirdi darshan guide and Aarti schedule for exact timings.

2. Decide General Queue vs VIP Darshan Pass in Advance

The general darshan queue is free and well-managed but unpredictable on busy days. The VIP Darshan Pass costs Rs 200 per person, lets you enter through a priority gate, and typically saves 1.5-3 hours. For elderly parents, small children or a tight one-day trip, the VIP pass is worth every rupee. Book it on sai.org.in up to 30 days ahead. Read the eligibility, slot timings and ID requirements on our dedicated Shirdi VIP Darshan Pass page before you decide.

3. Pre-Book an Aarti Pass for Kakad, Madhyan, Dhoop or Shej

The four daily Aartis — Kakad (4:30 AM), Madhyan (12:00 PM), Dhoop (sunset) and Shej (10:30 PM) — are limited-capacity events. Walk-in entry to the inner hall is almost impossible without an Aarti pass on regular days, and completely impossible on Thursday or festivals. Passes cost roughly Rs 400-600 depending on Aarti and open 30 days ahead on the Trust portal. Our Aarti booking online walkthrough explains the exact steps including ID requirements and payment options.

4. Keep Footwear, Phones and Big Bags in the Cloakroom

You cannot carry mobile phones, cameras, leather items or large bags inside the Samadhi Mandir. Free footwear stands (chappal stand) and paid cloakrooms surround the mandir complex. Use the official Sansthan-run cloakroom near Gate 1 — it issues a numbered token, is well-staffed and is open 24×7. Carry only your wallet, ID card and a small purse. Couples often hand the phone to one person who waits outside while the other completes darshan, then swap.

5. Bring an Original Photo ID (and Carry It Always)

Aadhaar, voter ID, driving licence or passport — any one original photo ID is mandatory to claim a VIP pass, Aarti pass or Bhakt Niwas room. Photocopies and digital scans are not accepted at counters. For senior citizens above 70 requesting the priority gate, the ID also acts as age proof. Keep it in a zip pocket; the queue corridors get crowded and pickpockets do exist around busy gates.

6. Dress in Modest, Comfortable Cotton

There is no rigid dress code at Shirdi but the Trust expects modest attire. Men: kurta-pajama, full-length pants or jeans with a clean shirt. Women: saree, salwar-kameez or full-length kurta with leggings. Shorts, sleeveless tops, ripped jeans and beachwear draw warnings at the gate. Cotton wins because you will queue 1-3 hours in close-packed lines and Shirdi summers cross 40°C. Our yatra rules and dress code page lists exact dos and don’ts.

7. Skip Thursday Unless You Have a Specific Vow

Thursday is Sai Baba’s day. Crowds swell to 3-5 times a normal weekday. Queues that take 90 minutes on a Tuesday can take 5-6 hours on Thursday, and Aarti pass slots sell out a month in advance. If you can pick your darshan day, choose Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Visit on Thursday only if you have an internal pull or a specific sankalp; in that case pre-book everything and arrive by 3:30 AM.

8. Eat at the Prasadalay — It Is Massive, Clean and Subsidised

The Shri Sai Prasadalay seats over 5,500 people at one time and serves a full Maharashtrian thali (chapati, dal, sabzi, rice, kheer) for around Rs 50. Meal coupons are sold at the counter behind the dining hall. The kitchen runs from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and again 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Wash your hands, take a steel plate from the stack, sit on the floor mats, eat quietly, return the plate to the wash counter. Avoid taking phones into the dining hall.

9. Photography Is Restricted — Know Where You Can and Cannot Shoot

No photography or videography is allowed inside the Samadhi Mandir, Dwarkamai or Chavadi at any time. You can take photos in the outer mandir courtyard, near the Sai Baba statue gate and along the approach lanes. Drones are not permitted anywhere in central Shirdi without written Trust permission. Disrespecting this rule can get your phone confiscated and you escorted out — first-timers often learn this when a security officer taps their shoulder.

10. Plan Dwarkamai, Chavadi and Gurusthan as Three Separate Stops

Most first-timers think Shirdi is only the Samadhi Mandir. The complete first darshan must include three more sacred sites within walking distance: Dwarkamai (the mosque where Sai Baba lived for 60 years), Chavadi (the resting hall where the Thursday night procession ends) and Gurusthan (under the neem tree where young Sai first appeared). All three are inside the same complex, free entry, and together take about 90 minutes. After this, walk 1.5 km to Khandoba Mandir — the temple where Sai Baba was first called “Ya Sai” by Mhalsapati.

Quick Pre-Yatra Checklist

Print or save this list 24 hours before you leave: original photo ID, Aarti and VIP passes (digital + printed QR), modest cotton clothes, refillable water bottle, small towel, mobile power bank, Rs 500-1000 cash for Prasadalay and donation, medicines for 2 days, basic toiletries. Book your Bhakt Niwas room at least 30 days ahead — the Trust runs comfortable Rs 200-1500 rooms a short walk from the mandir.
