Shirdi Photography Rules — Cameras, Mobiles, Drone No-Fly

Updated: 21 May 2026Reviewed by: Shirdi Sansthan Editorial DeskVerified against: Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust notifications

Inside the Samadhi Mandir sanctum, cameras and mobile phones are strictly prohibited. Photography is allowed in the outer courtyards, inside Dwarkamai (no flash), and around Chavadi, but drones are banned within a 5 km radius of the mandir under Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust and civil aviation rules.

The Single Rule That Matters Most

If you remember nothing else about Shirdi photography, remember this: no electronic device, no camera, no smartwatch with a lens, and no mobile phone of any kind is permitted inside the main sanctum of the Samadhi Mandir. Phones must either be deposited in a free locker before entering the queue complex or carried in a pocket with the screen and camera completely turned off. Security personnel at the entry frisking point check every devotee, and a forgotten phone is the single most common reason for queue delays.

This rule exists for two reasons. First, the sanctum is the seat of Sai Baba’s Samadhi — a place of silent darshan, not a tourist photo opportunity. Second, the trust has experienced repeated incidents of devotees disrupting the darshan flow to capture pictures of the marble idol, forcing the management to enforce a zero-tolerance policy.

Zone-by-Zone Photography Rules in Shirdi

Samadhi Mandir Sanctum — Strictly Banned

From the metal detector entry through the final exit ramp behind the Samadhi, no device of any kind may be used. This includes selfie sticks, GoPros, action cameras, and even fitness trackers with camera lenses. Devotees seen attempting to record video inside have their devices confiscated, and the footage is reviewed before the device is returned at the security office. For a complete overview of what to expect inside, see our Samadhi Mandir Shirdi guide.

Samadhi Mandir Courtyard — Allowed

The open courtyard outside the sanctum, including the parikrama path and the outer assembly hall, allows mobile and camera photography. Group photos with the temple gopuram in the background are common and acceptable. Avoid using a flash on devotees performing prayers, and never block the queue line for a photo.

Dwarkamai — Allowed Without Flash

Dwarkamai, the historic mosque where Sai Baba lived for sixty years, permits photography inside the main hall — including the sacred dhuni (eternal fire), the grinding stone, and the chillum-smoking corner. Flash photography is forbidden because it disturbs other devotees and the heat sensors near the dhuni. Read more on the Dwarkamai Shirdi history page.

Chavadi — Allowed Outside Only

The Chavadi, where Sai Baba slept on alternate nights, permits outdoor photography of the structure and the Thursday procession. Inside, however, photography is restricted during the night prayer. The famous Chavadi procession on Thursdays is one of the best photographic experiences in Shirdi — palanquin, drums, devotees in white, all under temple lights.

Gurusthan and Khandoba Mandir — Allowed

Both the Gurusthan neem tree shrine and the Khandoba Mandir (where Mhalsapati first called Sai Baba “Sai”) allow open photography. These are smaller, less crowded spots ideal for unhurried portraits and architectural shots. Visit our Gurusthan page and Khandoba Mandir page for context.

Drone Photography — Strictly No-Fly Zone

Drones, quadcopters, and any unmanned aerial vehicle are strictly prohibited within a 5-kilometre radius of the Samadhi Mandir complex. This is enforced jointly by the Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust security team and Maharashtra civil aviation regulations. The entire Shirdi township effectively sits within this no-fly zone.

Devotees who arrive with drones — even for personal travel vlogs — must keep them packed and inactive. Wedding photography teams visiting nearby resorts have been fined and had equipment seized. If you absolutely must film aerial footage of the Shirdi region, do so from outside the 5 km perimeter, with prior written permission from local police, and never directly overhead any temple or accommodation block.

What Happens If You’re Caught

The standard escalation followed by Sansthan security:

  1. First warning — verbal request to delete footage and put the phone away. Most cases stop here.
  2. Second instance — escorted out of the queue and asked to deposit the device at the locker before re-entering.
  3. Confiscation — for repeated offences, blatant videography, or drone use, the device is held at the security office. Owners must submit ID proof and write an undertaking before retrieval.
  4. Police involvement — for drone flights or commercial filming without permits, Shirdi Police is informed and a non-cognisable complaint may be filed.

Where to Deposit Phones and Cameras

Free cloak rooms and lockers are available at four locations around the Samadhi Mandir:

  • Queue Complex Building (Gate 1) — main entry, largest capacity
  • Bhakta Niwas Sthan adjoining the new darshan line
  • Dwarkamai side gate cloak room
  • Sansthan Prasadalay (mahaprasad hall) entry — for devotees coming straight from meals

Lockers are free of charge. Bring your own small padlock if you’re carrying valuables; the Sansthan provides numbered tags but not locks. Storage is usually limited to 4-6 hours, after which staff move unclaimed items to the lost-and-found counter. For a fuller pre-arrival checklist, see our Shirdi darshan guide and yatra rules and dress code page.

Approved Shirdi Photo Spots

If you’ve come to document your pilgrimage, here are the spots where photography is welcomed:

  • Samadhi Mandir gopuram from across the road — best at sunrise, golden hour on the spire
  • Lendi Baug garden — Sai Baba’s meditation garden, the well, and the Nanda Deep flame
  • Old Shirdi Village pathway — narrow lanes, mud walls, the rustic feel of pre-1918 Shirdi
  • Sainagar Shirdi Railway Station (SNSI) facade — Indo-Saracenic arches, photogenic platform
  • Wet Park and the Sai Heritage Village — recreated dioramas, allowed photography throughout

Etiquette for Devotee Photography

  • Never photograph other devotees in personal prayer without consent — especially elders, women in private worship.
  • Switch your phone to silent before entering any temple complex. Camera shutter sounds carry.
  • Avoid live-streaming inside any shrine. The trust treats this as commercial use even if your account is personal.
  • Do not climb statues, railings, or trees for a better angle.
  • Do not post images of the Samadhi sanctum (even old archive photos) on social media with location tags — this encourages copycat attempts.

Professional and Commercial Photography

If you are a journalist, documentary filmmaker, or content creator who needs commercial photography or video rights inside Shirdi, you must apply in writing to the Public Relations Office of the Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust. Applications require:

  • A formal request letter on company letterhead
  • Project synopsis and intended use
  • List of equipment to be brought in
  • Government photo ID of every crew member
  • Police clearance certificate for the lead photographer

Approvals, when granted, typically restrict shooting to non-darshan hours and require a Sansthan PR officer to accompany the crew. Contact details are on our contact page or directly at sai.org.in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take my phone inside Samadhi Mandir if it stays in my pocket?

Yes, provided the screen is locked and the camera is not used at any point. Security frisking is mainly to detect active recording. A switched-off phone in your pocket is permitted, but the safer option is depositing it in a free locker at the queue complex.

Are smartwatches with cameras allowed inside Shirdi temples?

Smartwatches without cameras are permitted. Watches with built-in cameras or video lenses fall under the same rule as phones and must be deposited at the locker before entering the Samadhi sanctum.

Can I photograph the Sai Baba idol from outside the sanctum railing?

No. The “no photography” rule applies to the entire sanctum chamber, including any angle that captures the Samadhi or the marble murti. Even pictures taken from the exit ramp are not allowed.

Is drone photography allowed for weddings near Shirdi?

Not within 5 kilometres of the Samadhi Mandir. Most Shirdi banquet halls and resorts fall within this perimeter. Wedding parties wanting aerial coverage must shoot outside the no-fly zone or obtain prior police clearance, which is rarely granted.

Where do I store my DSLR camera during darshan?

The cloak rooms at the queue complex and Dwarkamai side gate accept cameras of all sizes. Storage is free, but the Sansthan does not insure equipment, so carry your own small padlock and keep memory cards on your person.

Can I record the Madhyan Aarti on my phone for personal viewing?

No. Aarti recording is treated the same as darshan photography. Live audio and video broadcasts are available on the Sansthan’s official channels, including scheduled aarti timings and the live stream link on sai.org.in.

What happens if my phone falls out during darshan and starts recording accidentally?

Inform the nearest security volunteer immediately. Accidental recording is treated leniently if you cooperate, delete the clip in front of staff, and continue darshan. Hiding the device or refusing to show footage escalates the matter to a confiscation.
